Voting: Not Based on the Issues

Voting is a tricky issue, and voter's reasons for voting aren't what they should be. Voting for Obama just because he is black or for Romney just because he is Mormon doesn't help the country. Voting should be based on similarity to personal beliefs. Religion, race, or party should not be the sole reason for electing a candidate.

Obama (Note: as he currently has incumbent status, there is very little chance any other Democrat will be elected for the primary or the general election; as a result there is no need to go over any other prospectives. There are no other prospective democratic candidates.)
  • Pro tax cuts for those making under $250,000 and increased taxes on those making over $250,000
  • Stimulus Bill
  • Obamacare
  • Campaign promise to close Guantanamo Bay, hasn't done so
  • slowly drawing out troops from Afghanistan
  • Very pro abortion
  • Ended Don't Ask Don't Tell
  • Wants a progressive tax
  • Supporter of easier immigration and open borders
  • Gun control and a semi-auto ban
  • Pro NAFTA and UN, ect.

Mitt Romney (Note: As of today, Romney is the favored GOP candidate.)
  • Against National mandatory healthcare
  • Wants tax cuts and a balanced budget amendment
  • Pro troops and supports Iraq and Afghanistan wars
  • Supports increased spending on charter schools
  • Supports abstinence programs in schools
  • Supports gun control, but mildly. The NRA gave him a B rating showing that in most cases he is pro gun, but not all.
  • Anti gay marriage, but supports some domestic partnership rights. Supported state level laws banning discrimination in the work place.

Ron Paul (Note: He will likely just split the GOP vote and ensure Obama's presidency but that's neither here nor there.)
  • Very Pro-life
  • Anti-Federal Reserve and supports decommissioning it.
  • Supports a Balanced Budget Amendment and living within the country's means
  • Anti-Middle Eastern war because of the financial costs associated with it.
  • Very Pro-Second Amendment rights. Advocates for many reductions on gun control.
  • Supports private schools.
  • In regards to business, he wants the least amount of government intervention possible.

Newt Gingrich
  • Anti National health care, referred to it (rightly) as socialism.
  • Supports reduction in the Federal deficit and tax cuts
  • Supports war on terror and Afghanistan and Iraq
  • Skeptical of Islam
  • Increased border security with a guest worker program
  • In education, greater teacher accountability with more funding for math and science
  • Anti abortion, gay marriage, and gay adoption

Jon Huntsman dropped out today.

I don't think that most voters honestly look at the views of the candidates they vote for. All they look for is that R or D that accompanies the candidates name. The Framers must be so disappointed. I would again reiterate: Voting should be based on similarity to personal beliefs. Religion, race, or party should not be the sole reason for electing a candidate.
